The acousto-optic Frequency Shifter (AOFS) with RF driver is used to modify the frequency of the optical beam. Due to the Doppler shift, the frequency shift of 1st order diffracted light (variation quantity of wavelength) equals to the frequency of acoustic (wavelength) after the AO frequency shifters. If the incident direction of acoustic wave and optical wave are the same, the laser frequency shifts will be the positive value, anyway if the incident direction are opposite, the value of the laser frequency shifts will be the negative value.

Applications such as interference-based optical techniques require a high extinction ratio between the diffracted and undiffracted beam; This can be achieved with a high-quality optical finish to minimize optical scatter.

A DFB Laser (distributed feedback laser) is a type of laser diode, quantum cascade laser or optical fiber laser. The active region of the DFB Laser contains a periodically structured element or diffraction grating.

The structure builds a one-dimensional interference grating (Bragg scattering) and the grating provides optical feedback for the laser.

DFB lasers tend to be much more stable than Fabry-Perot or DBR lasers and are used frequently when clean single mode operation is needed, especially in high speed fiber optic telecommunications. Semiconductor DFB lasers in the lowest loss window of optical fibers at about 1.55um wavelength, amplified by Erbium-doped fiber amplifiers , dominate the long distance communication market, while DFB lasers in the lowest dispersion window at 1.3um are used at shorter distances.

Active Shooter Defense System

We are in the process of exploring a concept for an Active Shooter Defense System based upon integrating two existing technologies.  First, the system will use a gunfire detection and location system such as the Boomerang system fielded by Raytheon and BBN.  The second technology component is the use of a Laser dazzler device.
       The concept is fairly simple and straightforward.  Given the gunfire detection and location system can provide a coarse azimuth, elevation, and range to the gunfire source, an area of uncertainty around the shooter’s location can be calculated.  The laser dazzler (under Class 3R in power) with a small beam divergence, can be employed in a nutated and swept spot manner within the area of uncertainty so as to disorient the shooter with the “flash blindness” and “flicker vertigo” effects generated by the laser. In short — If He can’t see, He can’t point and effectively fire His weapon.
        Since most of the human carnage occurs within the first few minutes between when the shooter starts firing until law enforcement arrives, this system is intended to respond in seconds, not minutes.
